Hamas says it has accepted a proposal from mediators to release one living American-Israeli hostage and the bodies of four dual-nationals who had died in captivity.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has said Hamas is feigning “flexibility” in public while making entirely different demands in private, as discussions continue on the next steps for the fragile Gaza ceasefire.

Israeli fire has killed eight people in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours even as a fragile ceasefire with Hamas has largely held.

Hamas said on Friday it agreed to release an American-Israeli dual national, believed to be the last living American hostage held in Gaza, after receiving a proposal from mediators to continue negotiations on the second phase of a ceasefire deal.

Hamas said it’s willing to release all US-Israeli hostages, including one still alive, in a surprise move dismissed by both Israel and the US as unhelpful to negotiation efforts to end the war.

Hamas said it would release Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander if Israel started the next phrase of ceasefire talks.
