An American preacher who was taken hostage by armed men while preaching a sermon in a South African township last week has been rescued in a fierce gun battle with his kidnappers, police said Wednesday.

Suspects began firing at police from a car - and three unidentified men were killed. Josh Sullivan, an abducted missionary who was also inside the vehicle, was uninjured and found to be in "excellent condition".
