Hurricane Melissa is now a potentially devastating Category 5 storm heading toward Jamaica as more U.S. military assets head toward the region.

Hurricane Melissa strengthened into a Category 5 storm early Monday, unleashing torrential rain and threatening to bring catastrophic flooding to the northern Caribbean.

Volunteers from the United Cajun Navy have been on the ground helping in Jamaica since Hurricane Melissa moved through.

Nonprofits and airlines are teaming up in order to ship out cargo that will be necessary to rebuild and help families in the aftermath.

The fleet of U.S. military ships, comprising some 6,000 troops and several dozen crafts, is currently stationed in the Caribbean Sea as it attempts to prevent drug traffickers from entering U.S. territory with dangerous materials. The ships are assembled in the region to conduct strikes on alleged drug boats leaving the South American country.
