Over the next few days, many Americans will be seeing red. This is due to the total lunar eclipse, which will cast a "Blood Moon" into the night sky, viewable in all of the lower 48 states. This full moon is also being called the "Worm Moon," one of the Native American names traced back to the 1930s by the Maine Farmers' Almanac.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the earth aligns perfectly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow (umbra) over the moon. This causes the moon the appear reddish or dim, which is why it's given the term "blood" moon.
