Millions of people across the Upper Midwest and the Northeast are under air quality alerts Monday, as smoke from wildfires in Canada drift over the region

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is causing air quality concerns for millions of Americans in the Midwest and Northeast.  Air quality alerts were in effect Tuesday in several states, including Michigan and New York.

Two wildfires that started over the weekend on Colorado’s Western Slope have consumed more than 20,000 acres and destroyed at least three buildings, according to fire officials.

Another disaster emergency has been declared in western Colorado due to wildfires burning across the western half of the state.Late Monday night, Gov. Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency to support efforts to bring the LeRoux Fire in Delta County under control.

The Leroux Fire has already burnt approximately 700 acres of private and BLM land. Firefighters from the Crawford-Hotchkiss Fire District, the BLM, the Forest Service and the National Park Service are battling the blaze.

The Gifford Fire, a wildfire burning in Central California that has destroyed over 82,000 acres in five days, continues to rage and is now accompanied by two additional fires emerging nearby, according to officials.
