LVIV, Ukraine (RNS) — For centuries, Orthodox Ukrainians saw the traditional Julian calendar as one of the anchors of their church’s identity. Now many are switching to the Gregorian calendar.

"Nowadays, the Julian calendar is perceived as connected with Russian church culture," it said. Russia launched its full-scale, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Most eastern Christian churches use the Julian calendar, in which Christmas falls on Jan. 7, rather than the Gregorian calendar used in everyday life and by Western churches.
