Zohran Mamdani spent the last hours of his wedding celebration in Uganda huddled remotely with his team after learning of New York’s deadliest mass shooting of the last 25 years.

Mamdani has a history of criticizing the NYPD, but said on Wednesday that he doesn't plan to defund the department

In an interview with Gothamist, Mamdani said he learned about the missed connection from Islam’s brother-in-law, Kamrul Hasan, who is also a police officer. Mamdani said he called Hasan earlier this week to offer his condolences.
