A group of investors led by Massachusetts natives Donnie Wahlberg and Michael Carter-Williams are preparing a bid to bring a WNBA expansion team to Boston, according to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe.

To establish a WNBA team, Boston Women’s Basketball Partners needs to officially apply for a team, be approved by WNBA owners and pay an expansion fee. While the exact amount of the necessary fee is unknown, in Cleveland, the latest city to land a WNBA team, the ownership group behind the franchise paid a record $250 million expansion fee.

The WNBA is in an expansion flurry, with teams in San Francisco (Golden State), Portland, and Toronto beginning play in the next two years.
