Greece has seen a slight improvement in its wildfire situation, but officials on Thursday were not declaring the danger over. Firefighters, volunteers and local residents continue to battle numerous blazes across the country.

According to the Greek Fire Department Operations Center, firefighters are battling 106 fires in Greece, with 63 new starts reported Tuesday. Most of the fires are in Kefalonia, Vonitsa, Zakynthos, Arta, Preveza, Achaia, Chios and Aitoliko.

Greece is facing its toughest days yet of this year's wildfire season, a senior firefighting official said on Wednesday, after dozens of new blazes erupted in a single day and extreme weather hampers extinguishing efforts.

In the current fire season in Greece, over 310 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of starting wildfires. Notably, the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE) has made fifty arrests so far this year, a sharp increase from fewer than ten in the previous years.

Firefighters battled multiple wildfires across Greece, including blazes threatening villages and towns near the western city of Patras and on two tourist islands.

As wildfires raged through olive groves and pine forests outside Greece's third-largest city of Patras, scenes of compassion emerged amid the chaos as people raced to rescue farm animals and pets.
