A federal judge in New York ordered the case of Columbia University graduate and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil be transferred from New York to New Jersey where his lawyers will continue their legal efforts for his release.

Khalil, 30, was arrested March 8 at his university-owned apartment building in New York, then flown south to Louisiana, where he remains locked in an immigration detention center.

Mahmoud Khalil called himself a "political prisoner" in a new letter dictated from the Louisiana detention center where he remains held following his arrest.
