There is more than meets the eye on the Sun. 👀 In visible light (left), which the human eye can see, the Sun’s surface is freckled with dark splotches known as sunspots. Ultraviolet light (right) is invisible to the human eye but shows sunspots surrounded by bright regions named faculae. As the Sun’s activity ramps up with more eruptions, more sunspots and faculae will appear on the surface. While sunspots are dark, the bright faculae make the solar surface around 0.1% brighter at the Sun’s pea

🌞 Sun activity for November 21, 2023: It’s a potpourri of sunspots 😱 🥳 Today’s top news: Yesterday started with three active regions (sunspot groups), then bang, there were nine. Wow, that is crazy. 😎 This partially came about because new regions emerged on the disk. The most notable part of this sudden explosion of spots came from AR3490, which rotated further into view as well as growing into multiple separate groups of sunspots. 😵💫 It must have been a bit challenging for the space weat

The Sun: Abundant Sunspot Activity | NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory FriendsofNASA.org: An abundance of sunspot groups are present on the visible solar disk—at least 12 active regions. Sunspots are areas that appear dark on the surface of the Sun. They appear dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun’s surface. Solar flares are a sudden explosion of energy caused by tangling, crossing, or reorganizing of magnetic field lines near sunspots. The southern solar hemisphere has the m

The sun appears to be much the same day-in, day-out, year after year. But astronomers have long known that this is not true: the sun does change. Properly-filtered telescopes reveal a fiery disk often speckled with dark sunspots, which crackle with solar flares—magnetic explosions that illuminate Earth with flashes of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation. The sun is a seething mass of activity. Until it’s not. Every 11 years or so, sunspots fade away, bringing a period of relative calm. This

It’s #SunDay! This week’s (Aug 22 - 28) space weather report includes: · 15 M-class flares · 58 coronal mass ejections · 0 geomagnetic storms This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows the week’s activity. We currently have some very large active regions rotating towards Earth — bright areas of intense, complex magnetic activity that are often the sources of powerful solar flares and coronal mass ejections. But these bright active regions appear as dark sunspots in visible lig

Our Sun has entered a new cycle. A panel co-sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) & NASA has announced that the Sun’s low point in activity happened in December 2019, marking the start of a new solar cycle: https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/solar-cycle-25-is-here-nasa-noaa-scientists-explain-what-that-means/ Scientists study the solar cycle so we can better predict solar activity — critical both on Earth and in space. The Sun’s outbursts can disturb the satellites

Sometimes, dark spots freckle the face of the #Sun. These are #sunspots, cooler regions on the Sun caused by a concentration of magnetic field lines. They’re still not exactly “cool” though – they’re about 6,000°F compared to 10,000°F in the surrounding areas. Sunspots can be loners, or appear in groups. They are constantly appearing and disappearing, changing in shape and size. Sunspots can grow to be several times larger than Earth! They appear to move as the Sun rotates, as in this video from

Make a stellar snack: sunspot cookies! ☀️🍪 We've replaced solar plasma with butter and sugar for these small-scale Suns. Chocolate chips represent sunspots, which are one of the ways we track the Sun's activity cycle. https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/solar-activity/en/ Cookie recipe and decorating instructions available here: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/sunspot-cookies/en/ #NASAatHome | NASA Space Alerts

NASA Solar System Exploration on Instagram: "The Sun is stirring from its latest slumber. As sunspots and flares bubble from the Sun’s surface, representatives from NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA), and the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel have announced the Sun has reached its solar maximum period. The solar cycle is the natural cycle of the Sun as it transitions between low and high activity. During the most active part of the cycle, known as solar maximum, the Sun can unle
