The “Angel of Maryes Heights”, Sgt. Richard Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina infantry is a legendary story from the battle of Fredericksburg. While many wounded soldiers lay in front of his position after the disastrous charge of December 13th, Richard began to feel bad for them. He gathered up as many canteens as he could carry, and kept over the stone wall and began to give wounded soldiers water. Both union and confederate wounded received water from Kirkland who spent nearly two hours away
