Our AIM mission launched 14 years ago today! 🚀 Short for Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, AIM studies the atmospheric conditions that produce bright night-shining clouds. AIM captured this view of night-shining clouds, seen from above, in December 2020. https://go.nasa.gov/3aBeLEG | NASA Space Alerts

Glaciers and ice sheets move in unique and sometimes surprising patterns, as evidenced by a new capability that uses satellite images to map the speed of flowing ice in Greenland, Antarctica and mountain ranges around the world. With imagery and data from Landsat 8, a joint mission of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, scientists are providing a near-real-time view of every large glacier and ice sheet on Earth. Researchers aim to better understand how ice flow is changing worldwide by integrat

A new study has found that ice melting can warp Earth’s crust horizontally more than 1,000 kilometers away from the glacier. The study, conducted at Harvard University, paired satellite data of ice loss with a model showing how changes in mass (from ice sheets, glaciers, and ice caps) impact the planet’s outermost shell. It found that from 2003 to 2018, much of the Northern hemisphere shifted horizontally due to melting ice in Greenland and the Arctic. Canada and the U.S. shifted up to 0.3 mm pe

Older Arctic Sea Ice Disappearing Arctic sea ice has not only been shrinking in surface area in recent years, it’s becoming younger and thinner as well. In this animation, where the ice cover almost looks gelatinous as it pulses through the seasons, cryospheric scientist Dr. Walt Meier of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center describes how the sea ice has undergone fundamental changes during the era of satellite measurements. “At a glacial pace” used to mean moving so slowly the movement is almost imperceptible. Lately though, glaciers are moving faster. Ice on land is melting and flowing, sending water to the oceans, where it raises sea levels. In 2018, NASA launched the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) to continue a global record of ice elevation. Using millions of measurements from a laser in space and quite a bit of math, researchers mapped ice loss in Greenland and Antarctica. Here’s what the

Ice doesn’t just stick to airplanes, it builds layer by layer! As supercooled droplets impact the surface they freeze on contact and quietly change the wing’s shape and performance. ❄️✈️ . . . #AviationWeather #AircraftIcing #WinterFlying #Aerodynamics #PilotLife | RedTail Flight Academy

Ice-blue clouds are drifting high above the Arctic, which means the Northern Hemisphere’s noctilucent cloud season is here. ☁️💙 NASA’s Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere spacecraft — AIM for short — first spotted wisps of these noctilucent, or night-shining, clouds over the Arctic on May 17. In the week that followed, the ghost-like wisps grew into a blur, quickly filling more of the Arctic sky. This is the second-earliest start of the northern season yet observed, and the season is expected to
