The ducks are diving. Species Saturday invites you to meet the lesser scaup. The lesser scaup is a medium-bodied diving duck, meaning they feed by diving under the surface of deep water to find their food. Males have a dark emerald to black head and a mostly gray to white body. Females are mostly brown on their body and have a dark brown head with a white patch at the base of the bill. This short video shows two male lesser scaup diving under water at our USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center.

Thank you everyone for your support in donating $1,100 to help us recuperate the cost to care for a Lesser Scaup that was recently released after being in care at Wild ARC. We wanted to share a fun fact about the Lesser Scaup. Lesser Scaups are a medium-sized diving duck that are relatively common in this area. These 'seabirds' tend to prefer freshwater, whereas the very similar Greater Scaups are more often found in saltwater. Baby Lesser Scaups can dive underwater the day they hatch, but are s

The lesser scaup is a diving duck known for its striking blue bill and yellow eyes. These ducks are proficient divers, foraging for aquatic invertebrates and plants. They often form large flocks during migration. This Lesser Scaup (23-6686) was found in Pompano Beach unable to walk or fly. Treated for symptoms consistent with botulism, this patient has moved through the rehabilitation process with ease. Unable to stand on arrival, this duck has progressed to an outdoor aviary where there is plen

Release for a Greater Scaup! A Greater Scaup, a species of diving duck, was found stranded on an icy roadway that he mistook for a body of water. Treatment of these birds involves both checking for injuries and evaluating the waterproofing of their feathers. An examination concluded that, thankfully, this bird hadn't sustained any injuries. He was provided with supportive care, including rehydration fluids, nutritious food, and a bathing pool to enjoy during his short stay at TWC. Once he was re

“The diving ducks. They’re not diving, Clark.” Been watching our usually active ducks from the north ponder their migration decisions this evening. Know they’re fine, but potentially questioning if they exited too soon…like the rest of us. 😬 These are our Lesser Scaup friends, typically diving playfully. Scroll back a few posts for the video of their more typical activity, lots of fun. As I watched this evening, Christmas Vacation came to mind with Clark’s father-in-law. “The little lights. The

Large numbers of diving ducks are staging just off shore along the East Beach of Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. Both, Greater and Lesser Scaup were observed together. Scaup ID can be quite tricky, and head shape is a great mark to use to separate these two very similar species. Look for peaked head on lesser and more rounded gorilla head on greater. Do you know which scaup species is featured in our video? | Black Swamp Bird Observatory

Loved watching “The Diving Ducks of St Pete” perform yesterday! Believe these are Lesser Scaups. 🦆 Fan of wildlife and nature? Our Tampa Bay Area always impresses! There were 100’s of them, best illustrated in the last couple wide shots. And I still only captured a portion. May look like a loop, but you’ll see all 100 appear and disappear at end, not a loop. That last clip is 2x’s speed, rest are normal…simply need a tripod to stabilize. I’m obviously not a photographer, nor videographer, simpl
